Immodest Proposal Reflection
I have always been very passionate about energy, and learning about the possibilities of it in Steve’s class made me super motivated to learn more about it. Especially in the global climate that were in, and to me nuclear energy is great alternative. I believe that if the government would back up nuclear energy with funding we could really turn around our carbon emissions. Another big part of that is that if were going to have all of this nuclear power we need a place to store it, and that's why Yucca Mountain was the other piece of my proposal.
Throughout this project I learned alot about researching. I have never done a research project like this where I had to find all of my own resources, and come up with all of my own questions. For me this was a very different experience and I was able to gain a lot through it. Specifically using keywords to find articles that aided my side of the argument. But I was also able to find a lot of information on the other side, even if it seemed that it was backed up with little factual evidence, or just outdated information. And the connection I made to energy which is what my senior project is based around will aid me in understanding what language and information to look for in the future.
For me the most valuable thing I learned was about nuclear energy, and I learned a lot about how viable it can really be. With the United States consisting entirely of gen 2 reactors we are not even close to reaching our full nuclear potential. And I also learned about a lot of emerging technologies such as small modular reactors, which could produce energy for many small coal based rural communities. Additionally, learning about the legal side of everything and getting permits for nuclear reactors and how strenuous of a process that can be.
There were very few critiques I have for this project. I really appreciated that you had an example DP that was able to give me a very good idea of what I was to do for each part of the project. One thing for me that was a little bit off is that I felt like I had to do a new phase of research for every different part. This made the initial research phase almost obsolete because a lot of the information I got for my writings was more specific to the topic I was discussing. I don't have a specific Idea at the moment to better integrate our research into our writings without us having to have 3 different bibliographies.
