Reflection
The main goal of this project was to design a new campus for Animas High School. We started with interviewing people in our community and school. We did this to find their values so that we could incorporate those into our design. Then we started prototyping. Each person in our group made about 4 prototypes, we then went through those prototypes and selected our favorites and then refined them. This was right before all school exhibition. At all school took user feedback from our prototypes and used that for our next step. This is where we started making more refined visions for our campus and shared spaces. Once the group had decided on an idea for each of the different requirements we all started working on our final drafts of each requirement. I worked in Sketch Up on the 3D shared space and the blueprints for the school. Once we had all completed our final drafts I put them all on a 24 by 42 poster which we then had professionally printed. Our final step in this project was a mock Shark Tank with the Board of directors.
A few things that I learned about the human centered design challenge is that the outcome of your final product will include something that pleases everyone. We also learned a lot of skills for designing buildings. I used sketchup for the first time in this project and I gained useful skills for construction and building techniques. Kerkythea still confuses me but I could at least import a file from sketchup and do a very basic rendering. I also learned about how different sustainable building materials can affect the price and longevity of buildings. I learned that in budgeting the easiest way to do this is use a spreadsheet and set up the equations before you start. This will make putting in all of the data much easier .
One of the biggest things in our group was team work. Everyone in our group did an equal amount of work and we worked quite well together. One thing that was difficult is that we could not always get everyone to work. Or we would all get sidetracked and have random conversations. I was also the only person in our group with a few of the programs so I had to do extra work so that we could get everything done. I grew as a collaborator by accepting that fact that we were not always going to work perfectly together and sometimes if I had to put in extra work to get everything done I could.
I think that it is important for students to have an opinion at a school that they will be attending. If students take part in what schools look like then that would mean that the learning environment will be to their liking. This will improve the work ethic of the students that attend this school if they appreciate every aspect of the new school. There are some things in this school that people don't appreciate just because it has no specific design for a school environment.
